Lilongwe, March 12, Mana: President
Prof. Peter Mutharika has described the laying of foundation stone of Daeyang
University Teaching Hospital as a milestone in the provision of health services
in Malawi.
Mutharika made the remarks on
Saturday in Lilongwe when he presided over the ground breaking ceremony.
Daeyang University Teaching Hospital
(DUTH) will be a purpose built facility, which will train medical doctors, and
provide specialised treatment like cancer, heart diseases and others. The facility
will also serve as a referral hospital to VVIP, VIP and other people to
Malawians and neighbouring countries.
According to Mutharika, DUTH is the
first of its kind to be built in Malawi and Malawians will no longer need to
travel to India or South Africa to get special treatment on diseases like heart
disease as the services will be available in Malawi.
¡°I feel sad when mothers come to me
and kneel down and say bwana (boss) please my son is so sick can you please
send him to South Africa or India for treatment, now as soon as this hospital
is complete, it will be able to treat our patients here in Malawi,¡± said
Mutharika.
The president also commended the work that Chairperson for Africa Foundation
You Keun Chung and Daeyang is providing to the country in the services of
health, education and information communication technology (ICT).
Mutharika further said, ¡°Mr Chung
spent all his time working in the shipping industry, one day he woke up and God
told him to go and serve Malawi, he did not know where Malawi was, so he looked
on the map and there Malawi was. He decided that all his money and all the
money he made was going to be used to develop Malawi, this does not happen
anywhere in the world, MR Chung is really a God sent.¡±
In his remark Chan said it seemed
impossible 10 years ago when construction of Daeyang hospital started but now
it has become a top hospital and accomplished more that the expectation, by
treating 300 to 500 patients per day and treating over 1 million patients.
¡°We have exerted all our strength
with the strong determination that we cannot ignore the Malawians who are
suffering from diseases, we are here again to make the second miracle come
true,¡± Chung said.
According to Chung additional 300
beds will be added by constructing the 2nd and 3rd hospital buildings in
Lilongwe.The modernize hospital facilities and equipment will assist Malawians
so that those who used to go out to South Africa or India to get treatment will
get cured in Malawi.
Furthermore Miracle Foundation for Africa
will also build a 200 bed hospital in Mzuzu in order to establish a network for
Malawians.
Other areas of investment for
development by the Daeyang include ICT, health services, nurses training
college and development of agriculture.

for Africa a Korean based foundation
